Danish Passport Holders and ESTA

After January 12, 2009, all Danish citizens entering the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are required to apply for ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Travel Authorization is required. It is not an actual U.S. visa. The ESTA requirement applies to travelers entering the United States by air or sea under the Visa Waiver Program. Applicants must also have a valid machine-readable passport. Danish travelers without an approved ESTA Travel Authorization or a valid U.S. Visitor Visa will be denied boarding on all U.S. -bound flights. The U.S. government recommends that all Danish applicants apply at least 72 hours prior to travel to the United States.

What is ESTA?

ESTA stands for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. ESTA is an online application system developed by the United States government to pre-screen travelers before they are allowed to board an airplane or ship that is bound for the United States. ESTA and a US Visa are not the same. ESTA is only a U.S. -entry requirement for passport holders from visa waiver countries (including Denmark).

How long does it take to apply for ESTA?

The ESTA online application form takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Upon submitting your application, your travel details will be reviewed by a professional ESTA service provider and then submitted for processing on the official US government website. Anyone who is refused a travel authorization must apply for a United States visitor visa (B-1 Business or a B-2 Tourist visa).

Who needs to apply for ESTA?

Any Danish citizen who wants to enter or transit through the United States (by air or sea) under the visa waiver program is required to apply for ESTA. It is not possible to submit one application for many travelers or a family. Each traveler must have their own approved application, including babies and infants.

What is the visa waiver program?

The visa waiver program is a U.S. government program that enables citizens and
nationals from all member countries (including Denmark) to enter the United States for business or visitor purposes for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. The advantage of entering the United States under the visa waiver program is that you can travel to the United States on short notice without first going through the visa application process, which can take weeks or months to complete. Contrary to the visa process, the online application is usually
completed in less than 15 minutes.

ESTA Application Danmark

The ESTA Danmark Application offers a unique opportunity for Danish citizens to travel to the United States without much hassle. The last decade has seen a steep rise of Danish travelers to the USA, with a record high of 354,203 in 2015. It has been a steady influx of travelers to the USA, as in 2019, there were 314,060 Danish citizens traveling to the United States for leisure or business purposes.

The ESTA application time is significantly lower than other similar travel permits, owing to its advanced security check-up system. Most applications are processed in a couple of days, and travelers from Denmark must show their travel permits to border officials to gain entry into the USA. Border Protection CBP will monitor you arrival in the country. Nationals of VWP Countries are required to meet the all of the requirements for the travel authorization.

ESTA FAQ

Find here the most commonly asked questions regarding ESTA. Our support team can assist you further if you don’t find the answer you were looking for here.

Do I need to submit an ESTA on behalf of my children?

Yes, regardless of age, unaccompanied or accompanied children who are citizens of countries that have granted visa waivers must obtain their own ESTA approval prior to travel to the U.S. You can check the Waiver of Rights section for the second option (Third Parties Only) if you have submitted an ESTA application on behalf of a minor. You must understand and comply with the terms of the ESTA Visa Waiver Program for your child(ren) and honestly answer all questions and statements as their guardian.

ESTA is not available to children listed on their parent’s passports. To be eligible for travel authorization, children must have their own passport (unexpired). If issued or extended after 26 October 2006, children’s passports (Kinderreisepass) are not eligible for Visa Waiver Program. The document must then meet normal VWP eligibility requirements in that it be machine-readable and, if issued/renewed/extended on or after October 26, 2005, possess a digital photograph of the bearer integrated into the biographical data page. All Children’s IDs (Kinderreisepass) require a visa to qualify for the VWP.

Am I guaranteed entry to the USA if I have an ESTA?

Your electronic travel authorization will be approved if you have been granted it. This approval confirms your eligibility to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program but does not guarantee that you will be allowed to enter the country. A Customs and Border Protection officer will inspect you at the port of entry if you arrive in the United States. They may decide that you are not admissible under the Visa Waiver Program or for any other reason under United States law.

What happens if the ESTA Denmark applicant is found to be inadmissible?

If a traveler applying to enter the United States under Visa Waiver Program is denied entry, they will be returned to their country of origin or to a third country where the traveler has a round-trip ticket.

Should I apply for ESTA or a US visa?

You should apply for a US visa rather than an ESTA if:

  • If you plan to travel to the United States on a non-signatory airline.
  • If you plan to travel to the United States for stays of 90 days.
  • Before you travel to the United States, you must apply for a non immigrant Visa if you feel you are inadmissible under the Immigration and Nationality Act SS 212(a).
  • If you’re traveling to the United States to do something other than tourism or business.

I hold dual citizenship. How do I apply for ESTA?

Before a Visa Waiver Program participant can travel to the United States, they must have an approved travel authorization. A traveler who obtains a passport must apply for ESTA a second time using the passport. Each new application will incur a processing fee.

If you have dual citizenship and you are registered with ESTA, you can use your VWP-eligible passport when you board the plane to leave your country of origin and arrive in the U.S. If your two countries are VWP-eligible, then we recommend that you choose the one you wish to claim in order to travel to the U.S. Two people with different ESTA authorizations can confuse and delay your travel.

You should not apply for ESTA if you are a U.S. citizen and also a citizen of a VWP nation. Naturalized U.S. citizens must apply for and use a U.S. passport to travel. Although we know that naturalized U.S. citizens may use their passport from another country in certain cases, we expect that you will use your U.S. passport for travel from one country to the U.S. at both the point of travel (departure and arrival)

It is recommended to apply for ESTA 72 hours before departure

All passport holders from Visa Waiver countries must apply for their ESTA online
